A Marine Symphony of Coral, Coves and Conservation

The Similan Islands are an Andaman Sea treasure - a cluster of nine abrupt granite isles, crowned with powdery beaches and encircled by some of Thailand’s finest reefs. Declared a national park in 1982, they are now a protected sanctuary - intensely biodiverse, fiercely beautiful, and managed for both wonder and renewal.

From the main pier in Khao Lak, boats carry you into a world of submerged gardens - staghorn and soft corals waving beneath transparent waves, where turtles glide and reef sharks patrol. Snorkeling at Anita’s Reef or Barracuda Point reveals lively schools and potential manta or whale shark visits between December and April. On shore, granite boulders sculpt shaded coves; easy hikes reward with panorama across deep-blue oceans dotted with tiny isles.

The park is strictly managed - open only from October 15 to May 15 - to let marine ecosystems regenerate during the monsoon closure. There are no overnight stays, increasing the island’s remoteness and purity (liveaboards remain anchorage options offshore) . The result is a rare sense of paradise - the kind born from balance: traveler access, ecosystem care, and sustained wonder.

Highlights

  • Dive or swim among neon coral pinnacles at East of Eden
  • Paddle a kayak across secluded bays with transparent, shallow reefs
  • Take a guided marine biology briefing on reef health and protection

Tell us how you want to explore - our expert travel designers will turn it into a journey you’ll never forget.

Visiting Similan is like entering a cathedral of water: massive granite arches overhead, sunbeams dancing through clear depths, turtles gliding past you. I love coming early to Anita’s Reef - before the crowds - when the coral is undisturbed and the sea silent except for marine life. At sunset, we anchor offshore on a liveaboard, logging dives, sharing stories, and falling asleep to the rhythms of the waves. It's powerful, gentle, and unforgettable.
